Memories of Kit

Kit was energetic, humorous, and a joy to train. She was full of character and her personality fit in with our family.

Kit grew up with Kevin. Kevin taught her many things. Training started back in the litter where Kevin (age 10) and Christopher (age 12) introduced the puppies to soccer. Will never do that again; the pups were soccer ball crazy! As Kit grew she became an expert soccer player, and it became a game to try and keep the ball away from her, or to take it away from her. The boys spent hours playing soccer with her. Then there was baseball where Kit played in the outfield and retrieved all the balls hit. Next was flag football. I remember looking out the window to the back yard and seeing Kevin chasing Kit. Kit had a football in her mouth and flags tied around her waist. I went out to ask Kevin what he was doing, and he replied, “Practicing for the next game.” I do have to say no one got passed Kevin while he played defense.

There was the time Kit caught a squirrel…well, she thought she caught a squirrel. When we lived in the city, there were many squirrels. The squirrels would jump from tree to tree while I was giving lessons. The squirrels would run along the fence just out of reach of the dogs. Kit loved to chase the squirrels, and it was her mission to someday catch one. So one day while in the back yard Kit ran out behind the shed and came back to me with something in her month. I looked down and screamed, and she just stood there looking at me. I told her to drop it and it fell to the ground. Kit was so proud of herself. She had caught a squirrel. The squirrel was dead, and had been dead for days. It was as hard as a rock and bloated about 4 times the size of a living squirrel. No matter to Kit, mission accomplished!

In the field Kit was an awesome marking dog, pinning all her marks all the time. It was amazing to watch her. The bad thing was she would go under, over, or through any thing in her path. So, you had to set up retrieves that would not hurt her. In the agility ring, Kit flew. She could take 4 or 5 jumps before I even got off the start line. In the obedience ring Kit did well earning a few 200 scores. Kit liked to show, but her one bad habit was to roll on her back in the ring. She would only attempt this in between exercises, and at one show she rolled and rolled kicking her feet in the air. Kit never took life seriously. Her attitude even to the end was “life is good!”

Kit retired from competing at a young age due to a back injury. It was that one mistake I made when I set up a retrieve. She attempted to jump a cliff and fell 20 feet down. The cliff was not on the way to the retrieve and I did not know it was there. Kit retrieved, and I moved over a little as she was returning to me. I moved right in the path of the cliff and she always came in a straight line back to me. She did not break anything, but would have back problems all her life after that. Lucky for me she had excellent hips and was with us for almost 15 years.

Kit spent her last 3 years in the country at our home in Lodi. She loved it! No squirrels here, but the house came with two cats. Cats were just as good as squirrels, and she chased them whenever she could. She never caught one, and they knew she could not catch them, so they did not run very fast. She had long walks in the fields where she taught Dream that cow pies were good to eat and roll in (of course you only roll in the wet ones).

To Kit: Thanks for helping me get through those teenage years with the boys. Thanks for being Kevin’s best friend and allowing him to play all those games with you. Thanks for being a happy dog, always!

There are many more stories of Kit, but this is all I can write at this time. Thanks for reading.
