Shows in Roseburg, Oregon

We left for Roseburg, OR on Wednesday. Sliver, Sugar and Carole came too. The shows were indoors on carpet. The two rings just fit in the building with crating done in the hallway to the room.

To enter the Utility ring you go through an open door and you are in the ring. Very hard to watch anything. There are two open doors along the side of the ring but the baby gates are right up to the doors. It is an odd picture to the dogs. There are two switchplate covers on the ground right down the center of the ring which gave some dogs problems.

We are staying at the Windmill Inn, which is a very nice place. Wednesday we arrived late and found out we were on the freeway side of the motel. Very hard to sleep, so in the morning I asked for another room. When we arrived back from the show a new room was ready for us. You could still hear some road noise but it was a lot better.

So, for the first show Dream NQ’ed in Utility for anticipating the sit signal. With people peeking in the doorways I could not blame her for being a little jumpy. She settled down for Open and won the class and High In Trial. That night we stayed in our new room. At 5 am Carole got up to use the bathroom only to find out she could not open the door. She woke me up and we tried to get into the room. The door handle was broken and there was no way in. So Carole went up to the front desk, and they told her the maintenance man would be in at 9:00. Lucky for us the first class started at 9:10, but that still was not enough time for me to get to the show. We decided to go back to bed and get up at 7:00 and hope someone could get into the bathroom then. Carole got a key to another room and took a shower at 7:00. Not getting into the bathroom would not have been a problem except that my contacts were in there and I could not see without them. The front desk sent the driver to our room at 8:00 (the driver is the person who drives you to the airport or fairgrounds). This man tried to get into the room with no luck. So at 8:30 he broke the door open and we left here at 9:00 for the show. After the show we moved to another room.

Dream did very well and won both classes and High in Trial and High Combined.

End of August

The end of August brought us two shows in Santa Rosa. Dream had an off day on Saturday, NQing in Utility and winning 3rd in Open with a 198. On Sunday she won both classes with a 199 in Open and a 198.5 in Utility, which was good for High In Trial and High Combined.

For September there was a Lab club that offered all-breed obedience on the 3rd in Grass Valley. This made for a 3-show weekend. It can be very hot in Grass Valley, but this year it stayed in the 80’s and the judges were nice enough to make sure we did sits and downs in the shade. Dream won both classes and High In Trial and High Combined at the Lab club. The High Combined was Dream’s 100th win so now she has 100 High In Trials and 100 High Combineds. On Saturday Dream again won both classes and High In Trial and High Combined with 199.5 scores in each. About half way through the day I was not feeling well, and by Sunday morning I could not get out of bed. Billy went off to the shows without me as he was showing two dogs for clients. Dream and I stayed home. It was not until Wednesday before I could get up and walk around. Hard to believe I missed a show!

The following weekend were two shows in Petaluma. I felt well enough to go and went up Friday and stayed with a friend. On Saturday I was not feeling right and was having a hard time breathing in enough air. I knew I probably had pneumonia and moved around slowly. Dream NQed Utility and won Open with a 199.5 for High In Trial. On Sunday she won both classes and High In Trial and High Combined. She earned her 14th perfect score in Utility. I did not give her much help as I had to catch my breath after each command and exercise. I almost had to go sit down but made it through. I went to the doctors on Monday, had an ear infection and pneumonia. Feeling much better now!!

That is it for shows in September as I will be judging at the end of the month.

8/21

We are staying in File, WA for three shows that are in Enumclaw, WA. The first show was on Thursday: It was a sporting group only show. The obedience part of the show was held in the Rabbits building. This is a small building with room for only one ring and a little crating area. Rally will be held in this building for the All Breed shows on Saturday and Sunday. The building is a uninsulated metal building with fans on the ceiling and fans on the walls. Rubber mats are used for the ring. Around the walls, low to the ground are grates with chicken wire over them for ventilation. Baby gates are used around the ring inside the three walls, but you can see people’s legs and dogs walking by through the grates. On one wall people had their dogs crated outside the building in front of the grates. From a person’s view the ring was nice; from the dogs view it was a little interesting and something Dream has not seen before. Because of the fans, dog fur blew around the ring just a foot or so off the ground. Dream won both classes with a 197.5 in Utility and 199 in Open. She was High Combined and High In Trial. Obedience started at noon and ended around 4:00 with rally starting after that. I was done by 2:00 and told I would have to stay until 5:00 to have the ribbon presented in the group ring. I thought that would be nice since it was a sporting group only show and Dream like to show off every once in awhile. So at 5:00 I went to the group ring, but the judge was still judging rally and would not be done for another 2 hours. I was told only the judge could give me the ribbon in the ring and since he could not do that I could not give a demo and get my ribbons. Hard to believe things like this still happen. I told them they could just hand me my ribbon without a demo. After some time the show chair handed me my High In Trial ribbon and informed me that they had no idea where the High Combined ribbon was. Then they said ,“Do you want a picture?” I THINK NOT!!

Carole and Sugar came with us; so on Friday, since there were no shows, we drove to Snoqualmie Falls. I spent a few summers in Snoqualmie as a kid visiting with my Great Grandma. We went to the falls and took Sugar and Silver for a walk, saw the falls and went to lunch in the town. For dinner we met Carole’s son and daughter-in-law and new grand baby for dinner by the wharf in Tacoma.

On Saturday we had the first all-breed show. The entries were nice with 25 in Open and Utility. Dream won Utility with a 196.5 and won 3rd in Open with a 198.5. We lost a runoff for 2nd but won a runoff for High Combined. This time they had the ribbon but could not find the prize which (I was told) was a big stuffed bear. The three rings were in a large building and rubber mats were used on the floor.

The fairgrounds had a large parking lot that was asphalt and gravel and had no shade. Across the street from the fairgrounds was a home with a large grass field and trees so the owner was parking people on his property. He charges the same price as the fairgrounds for no shade spots but charged $10.00 for the spots in the shade. This parking was right across from the main entrance to the show so it was closer and there was shade. We parked there and left Sugar and Sliver in the van. Before we left we ran them in the guy’s field. I asked him how much parking he does in a year, he said 3 weekends, not much goes on at the fairground, but he can park about 50 cars at $10.00 each and 200 cars at $5.00 each.

On Sunday Dream did a great job in Utility and won second with a 198.5; she was third  in Open with a 197.5. Dream bobbled the dumbbell for a point off in Open. We were given our stuffed bear prize from yesterday, but no luck on getting the prize and ribbon from Thursday. Will send them a letter when I get home. We made  it as far as Roseburg and will be home tomorrow.

7/28/10 Carmel and Reno Shows

Two weeks ago Dream and I were in Carmel for three shows. We had a good trip with Dream winning High in Trial all three days and she won High Combined two days. She did not have the opportunity one day for  High Combined  because I was only able to show her in one class.

I showed Sliver one day in Rally Excellent, and she did a nice job. The course was very challenging and included a back up 3 steps. I do not really care about this exercise because I will never need it in the Obedience ring. So I work on it, but do not stress it. When I went to do it Sliver jumped back and went butt out and then jumped behind me then behind me again. I felt it was a good try and did not repeat it. Well the judge thought otherwise. As I left the ring those who were watching said Sliver was perfect. My score was posted and it was a 90 for 1st place. The judge said the back up was more like a jump, hop, hop, jump, throw your body out of control. She does not know Sliver, that was control, Sliver did not go run around the ring!

Last weekend we were in Reno for three shows. There was a match on Thursday in the building, but I did not do the match. I did get there by 6:00 and was able to set up my crate for the next day and walk Dream around. It was very hot, around 100 outside and there was no air conditioning on in the building. We did not stay long and headed to our motel to get cool. It was still 100 degrees the next day, but the air conditioning was on. Dream went into Utility first and was good but not quite herself. She was sitting slowly and finishing slowly. That just was not normal for Dream. In Open she anticipated the recall off the drop. We did win a 3rd in Utility. I checked her over and found she had milk! Great, she was going through a false pregnancy. I thought I would see how she felt the next day and if she was not up to working we would head home.

It was cooler on Saturday for the second show and Dream seemed good, we went into Utility first and then into Open. She worked well and won both classes with a 199 in each. She did go on to win High in Trial and High Combined.

For the third show on Sunday Dream won second in Utility with a 198.5 and (pinch me) earned her 13th perfect 200 score in Open B (and I was going to go home). She was High in Trial and we won a run off for High Combined.

7/3/10 Dream’s Summer Trip Part 3 – Lost Coast Kennel Club

Billy and I are up in Ferndale, CA for 3 shows that started yesterday. The shows are put on by the Lost Coast Kennel Club and held at the fairgrounds in Ferndale. The shows are small with only one ring for Obedience and Rally. We are staying at the Bayview Motel that is up on a hill overlooking Humboldt Bay. It is a nice place and very clean, plenty of grass to air the dogs, but not any place to walk them.

We have Sliver, Bunny, Dream, and Lisa N’s Finn with us. Sliver and Bunny came along for the ride. Billy is showing Finn in Novice B and Rally. Finn earned has earned his first and second CD leg with first places and earned his RA and one leg on his Rally Excellent title with first places. Dream won both classes yesterday and won High In Trial and High Combined. Today she earned her 12th 200 in Open B and also won Utility with a 198. She went on to win High In Trial and High Combined. We were interviewed for the local news show yesterday. Not sure if we made the news because we did not get a change to watch it. One more show tomorrow then we head home (a six and half hour drive).

6/28/10 Dream’s Summer Trip – Part 2

Dream, Sliver and I headed to Canby Oregon on the 23rd. Suzanne T., Ann B. and Barbra H. were also heading up for the shows. Suzanne had come for a lesson in the morning and then headed out about a half hour before me. I met up with her at a rest stop. We ended up staying at the same motel that night and had dinner together.

We had about a 4 hour drive to Canby the next day. I figured that Suzanne would get there before me as I had stopped a few times to let the dogs out. But I was there first and after a few minutes of checking the grounds out Suzanne called to tell me she had broken down and was about 1 hour from the grounds on Hwy 5 waiting for a tow truck. She was towed to Portland and they got the van running. It was something to do with the fuel pump.

I stayed at the Motel 6 in Tigard; would not stay there again if I can help it. Suzanne stayed at the Best Western and it was nice!

There were 2 shows on Friday and one show on Saturday and Sunday. Ann and Hope picked up 1 point and only need 9 to finish their OTCH. Barbara and Bonnie earned a HIT and their CDX. Suzanne and Natalie won some placements, but Natalie was not her self (just coming out of heat). Dream did a no sit on a go out and a no finish on two of her runs, but she still came home with 6 firsts, a second, and a third place. And won High In Trial 3 out of the 4 shows and 4 High Combineds.

The weather was nice (it is to HOT here at home!) The drive was nice too. Lake Shasta is so full. I have not seen it that full in 20 years. Mt. Shasta still has a lot of snow on all sides of it.

My engine light came on just as I crossed back into California. It went off when I filled up for gas. It turns out that the attendant did not tighten the cap. You can not fill your own car in Oregon. The van ran great so we are off to Ferndale on Thursday for 3 more shows.

6/21 Dream’s Summer Trip — Part 1 The end

We made it home! I dropped Carole off in Tahoe and dropped the rental car off in Truckee. Billy met me in Truckee and we drove to Jackson to pick up the van. The van now has a new transmission and runs great. This is the second transmission in less then a year, so it was under warranty.

The 8th and last show was on Sunday; Sliver was not entered. Dream won 2nd in Open and 1st in Utility and went on to win High Combined. She only NQ’ed one out of 16 times in the ring and came home with 7 out of 8 High Combineds and 5 High in Trials. We head to Oregon on Wednesday for 4 shows in 3 days.

Sugar and Carole were great company and I thank them for coming along. We met some very nice people this trip. We met two women (one from New Mexico, “Arlyn” and one from Montana, “Dorothea”) that show collies. Arlyn and her collie, which she shows in Open and Utility, only need 8 points to finish their OTCH. This is Arlyn’s first dog she has shown in Obedience. It was very nice talking with them.

Dick and Kay Guetzloff were there too. Dick is so funny you would not believe it. He had so many stories to tell. He told one story about a judge a long time ago that was judging the Open B class. During the sits and downs a golden was eating grass during the sit, a lot of grass. This dog would go on to win the class. So Dick asked the judge if he took points off for the dog eating the grass. The judge replied, “Only if he smokes it!” There was another judge that told Dick he was winning too much and would not give him first place. So Dick told her he would follow her all over the country until she gave him a first. He showed under her many times and never won until one show he scored himself out loud after each exercise. So after the heeling he said perfect, after the drop he said half point, after the retrieve on the flat he said half point, after the high jump he said perfect, after the broad jump he said half point. At the end of his run he turned to the judge and said that was a 198.5. After the class was over, the judge announced the awards and Dick won the class with a 198.8! Dick was known for his famous dog Sweep who had over 7000 OTCH points. Dick is now 81 years old.

Glad to be home for a few days.

P.S. I just realized that Dream has earned 100 High in Trials!

6/19/2010 Dream’s Summer Trip – One Day To Go!

Show 7: Dream won Open with a 198.5+. In Utility she almost blew the article again. She went around and around the pile 5 times before deciding to pick up the right one. We won the class with a 196.5.

It is a warm day in the 80’s, which turns out to be good for Sliver. She won Rally Advanced with a perfect 100 score. I can say she was very good today, keeping all four feet on the ground. Dream went on to win High and Trial and High Combined.

One more show to go and then we will be on our way home.

6/18/2010 Dream’s Summer Trip Show 6!

It is finally warming up; today I needed no hooded sweatshirt or jacket. Dream had one of those strange days. In Utility she picked up the wrong article. In Open she had another 199.5 score going when during the long down she barked not once but 5 times. She lost 5 points for barking, for a 194.5 score and 3rd place. Hard to believe Dream barked! No clue why. She has never done that and will probably never do it again.

Little Sliver did a nice job in Rally Advanced when she kept her feet on the ground. We lost 5 points for jumping up on all the left and 270 left turns. This time she had a broad jump and thought about taking a run, but I told her to LOOK right after the jump. She thought I had a cookie so she stayed in heel. I again was asked how old my puppy was! And, yes, thanks to Carole I do have her zoomies around the ring on tape.

6/17/2010 Dream’s Summer Trip 5th Show

It was a very cold 38 degrees outside this morning. When we showed it was 42 degrees with a slight wind. Dream went into Open first, and won with a 199.5. In Utility she won with a 199 score. She went on to win High In Trial and High Combined.

Little Sliver was the talk of the day! I had moved her up to Advanced Rally, which is off leash. We stepped into the ring and took off the leash. She started out great, doing a 360 to the right, then a 360 to the left, then a halt call to front and finish right. Next was a right turn, then a fast, then an about turn, then a left turn into the bar jump. She was perfect up to the jump–she jumped, came right into heel, and then off she went for a lap around the ring. She ran as fast as her legs would go making her laughing sound as she ran. She only took one lap and as she came around me I said heel and she jumped into heel and we continued on. I had a hard time getting the last few commands out, because I was laughing. We finished the course perfectly. We qualified with a 92 (8 points off for having the zoomies). During the awards the judge said to the crowed, “If you did not see it we had a little golden that was doing a perfect performance until she got the zoomies!” As I left the ring I was stopped by many who asked, “How old is your puppy?” She is two going on 6 months!

It is a nice 56 degrees out right now, but there is a freeze warning for tonight.

We are off to get a Sliver of Pie with some Sugar on top!

Hope Gridley is going well for those who went.
